Prepare before accepting the next job

GTA III rewards preparation. Once the opening drives are finished, return to your hideout and save regularly in separate slots. A failed assignment can leave you without useful weapons, health or a decent vehicle. An earlier save is especially valuable before a long mission chain. Resist buying every weapon immediately: keep cash available for ammunition, armour and mission expenses.

A dependable Portland routine

Learn the roads between your hideout, hospital, gun shop and Pay ’n’ Spray first. A slightly longer familiar road often beats a supposed shortcut through fences and yards. Radar markers can be above or below your position; a nearby dot does not necessarily mean there is a direct entrance.

1. Choose an undamaged car with manageable handling. Maximum speed is less useful when every tight corner sends you into traffic.
2. Read the current objective before driving away. Some missions require a passenger to survive or a particular vehicle to remain intact.
3. Park clear of a gunfight and approach on foot. Break enemies’ sightlines with building corners and separate opponents instead of engaging an entire group together.
4. Leave a burning vehicle immediately. Keep a generous margin beside water too: Claude cannot swim.
5. Clear a wanted level before the next job where practical. A suitable spray shop helps with ordinary cars, but it will not accept every vehicle.

Progression and controls

Further islands open through story progression. Do not spend the opening hours trying to jump every blocked connection. Vehicle jobs and collectibles offer separate goals rather than being prerequisites for every story mission. Before precision shooting, check the scope and camera bindings. Original releases and the Definitive Edition handle differently; modern targeting does not replace careful positioning or a manual save.
