GTA Advance: controls, radar and saving
Learn Mike’s handheld controls and establish a useful starting save.
Learn the original buttons
GTA Advance uses its own GBA control layout. The directional pad moves Mike, and L enters or exits vehicles. On foot, A attacks and B sprints. Holding R while moving locks your facing direction for strafing. In a car, A accelerates, B brakes or reverses and R operates the handbrake. Practise those roles on a clear street first. The same A button has very different effects on foot and behind the wheel, so check that Mike has actually left the vehicle before trying to start a fight.
Connect the radar to the streets
Jump Start takes you from Vinnie to a car, a restaurant and the hideout. Use that quiet journey to learn how main roads connect to the smaller streets. A radar marker identifies your destination, but a building can still block a direct approach. Brake before objective markers and enter them slowly. That habit also helps with later passenger pickups. Read pager messages completely: Getaway explicitly changes the supposedly safe return route through a new instruction, so the most familiar destination is not always the one you should follow.
Create a dependable starting point
Between missions, walk into the blue circle at the hideout to use its saving option. Establish a useful save after a completed assignment before spending money or beginning risky side activities. Learn where weapons and supplies are available rather than searching the whole map during the next job with an empty magazine. Do not confuse ordinary game saves with emulator save states. The accompanying selection explains two specific Portland assignments; it is neither a complete story walkthrough nor a full list of side activities. Every button reference uses the original Game Boy Advance layout and needs the corresponding mapping if you play through an emulator.
