Prerequisite and the crucial destination change
Getaway follows Fake IDs. Vinnie has called Mike to Chinatown, but he is absent from the meeting. His message first sends you to the prepared getaway vehicle and then to Callahan Point. This walkthrough reveals the story event there. The crucial change afterwards is that Mike’s initial plan to return to the old hideout is replaced by 8-Ball’s warning. The final state requires no wanted level and a meeting with 8-Ball. The explosion alone does not complete the mission, and it is not a bomb-disposal objective you can prevent by arriving faster.
Distinguish locations, vehicles and markers
The route remains on Portland. You do not need to cross Callahan Bridge to another island for this assignment.
| Stage | Location or marker | Required action |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Vinnie’s Chinatown meeting point | Trigger the assignment and read his change of plan. |
| Getaway car | Old hideout a few blocks north | Collect the supplied Banshee. |
| Meeting | Callahan Point car park near the bridge | Stop the car inside the blue square. |
| Escape | Initial hideout instruction, then 8-Ball’s pager | Follow the revised warning and clear police attention. |
| Finish | 8 marker at the premises visited in Fake IDs | Trigger the contact with no wanted level; the old hideout is no longer the finishing destination. |
Step by step
Keep the required vehicle collection separate from the later freedom to choose another escape vehicle.
- Reach Vinnie’s Chinatown mission marker. After the short scene, read his pager instruction: the changed plan requires the getaway car from the hideout and a meeting in Callahan Point.
- Go a few blocks north to the hideout and enter the waiting Banshee. Use the specified car for this section rather than continuing straight to the new meeting in your initial approach vehicle.
- Head south to the Callahan Point car park. Follow the pink radar destination and stop in the blue square on the southern side of the lot. You are looking for Vinnie’s car, not an island crossing.
- Let the explosion sequence play. When control returns, get Mike clear and use a drivable car. The contemporary walkthrough explicitly allows changing vehicles after this event.
- Observe the initial instruction towards the hideout. If the change has not appeared yet, head that way until Mike’s warning comment or 8-Ball’s pager updates the assignment. Do not treat the old house as the final handover point.
- Read 8-Ball’s revised instructions completely: avoid the hideout, lose the police and visit him. Check the active wanted display rather than following an obsolete destination alone.
- Clear police attention through Pay ’n’ Spray or suitable police-bribe pickups. Use an appropriate ordinary vehicle for the spray shop. Avoid additional collisions with people or attacks that create fresh police attention.
- Once your wanted level is zero, drive to the premises marked 8, already familiar from Fake IDs. Stop, get out and walk into its blue contact circle to trigger the meeting with 8-Ball.
- Wait for Mission Passed after the conversation. The following pager leads to Twisted Metal. Entering the contact circle again starts that next assignment rather than satisfying an additional Getaway objective.
The pager and Pay ’n’ Spray: an important sequencing limit
Sources describe the warning and workshop visit in different orders. One contemporary FAQ goes straight to the respray; Area GTA reports that the shop initially will not accept you and first follows the return-home warning. Do not rely on a universal shortcut. If the shop does not respond during the early escape, follow the current objective until the warning and redirection appear. The well-supported finishing conditions remain the same: clear your wanted level completely and reach the 8-Ball contact. Differing published counts of the initial wanted stars are not needed for this route.
Troubleshooting
For an apparently blocked sequence, check both the destination and the active mission state.
| Problem | Check and next action |
|---|---|
| Vinnie is absent in Chinatown | That is the intended opening. Read his pager and collect the Banshee at the hideout rather than waiting for him there. |
| At Callahan Point, no scene | Use the actual blue car-park square and stop. Merely reaching the bridge approach or district does not trigger the meeting. |
| Pay ’n’ Spray will not respond yet | Check the vehicle and current instruction. If the return-home warning is still pending, trigger that comment/pager transition first, then try the workshop again. |
| 8-Ball will not receive you | Bring wanted level fully to zero, reach the 8 marker and enter the contact circle as Mike. Driving past does not trigger every contact. |
| You are looking for the wreck after the conversation | Wait for Mission Passed and the new pager. Further work involving Vinnie’s car belongs to the next assignment. |
Saving and a controlled retry
A normal save between Fake IDs and Getaway is a useful starting point for a repeat attempt. Distinguish a mission contact from normal hideout saving: 8-Ball’s blue circle triggers conversations and does not automatically open a hideout save menu. The original manual also describes Start → Quit Game with a saving option for interruption. That does not make an active escape a completed mission; this guide does not promise exact resumption from an arbitrary intermediate state. Emulator save states are a separate feature.
Short FAQ and GBA boundaries
Can you prevent the explosion? It is the intended story transition; escaping afterwards is the objective. Must the Banshee survive afterwards? No: changing vehicles is documented after the explosion. Where is 8-Ball? Follow the same 8 marker as in Fake IDs. The pager calls the area Portland Beach, so a map from GTA III can mislead you. Which buttons apply? Original GBA: L enters/exits, A accelerates in a car, B brakes/reverses. Map emulator keyboard inputs to those GBA functions.
Researched from contemporary GBA FAQs, the original manual, dialogue documentation and mission sources; no firsthand playthrough claimed. Omits disputed star counts and explains early workshop/pager sequencing as a possible variation rather than a universal shortcut.
