Vice City: released in 2002, at home in the eighties
Release date and story setting are different things. A short guide to the neon classic.
When was Vice City released?
Take-Two’s contemporary announcement dated 29 October 2002 states that GTA: Vice City was available in North America, with a European release on 8 November 2002. These dates refer to the original PlayStation 2 launch. Later ports have their own release dates.
Why does everyone mention 1986?
1986 is the year in which the story takes place. 2002 is the year of the original release. Tommy Vercetti’s story deliberately looks back at the eighties. The same distinction matters throughout our archive: setting, release year and re-release are separate pieces of information.
Original or Definitive Edition?
The Definitive Edition is part of the Trilogy collection released in 2021. Check the version when following a guide: controls, presentation and technical details in a guide to the original PlayStation 2 release can differ from a later edition. Music licensing and availability may also vary between versions.
Returning to the city
Start with the opening story missions and learn the routes between your regular destinations. Create a separate save before longer attempts and note which version you are playing. When looking for help, include the platform and edition alongside the mission name to reduce conflicting advice.
