A history written before release
As of 8 November 2026, GTA VI has not been released. Its official page lists 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This account therefore covers documented public development milestones, rather than a settled retrospective production history. Rockstar Games presents the project. These announcements do not establish a complete allocation of original development, porting and support teams; the studio label here deliberately refers to Rockstar collectively rather than inventing a final credits list.
Confirmation does not establish a starting date
On 4 February 2022, Rockstar confirmed that active development of the next GTA was well underway. That does not mean work began on that date. The statement set an overall ambition to move beyond previous games. The named GTA VI announcement followed in December 2023. These dates identify public milestones, not internal prototype records or an evidenced catalogue of discarded concepts. Consequently, this account does not reconstruct an unverified original pitch.

PlayStation 5 is an announced platform alongside Xbox Series X|S. This device photograph shows no GTA VI gameplay.

The announced direction: Jason, Lucia and Leonida
With the second trailer announcement, Rockstar described Jason and Lucia as two characters drawn into a wider conspiracy after a failed criminal score. Vice City forms part of the state of Leonida. Our interpretation is that a two-character relationship and a world extending beyond one city are central announced design elements. That establishes a public direction, not a verified mission structure. Character profiles and trailers do not by themselves prove particular decision trees or a complete system governing the eventual game.
Separate presentation, technology and edition status
The official product page gathers trailers, places, characters and release information. It demonstrates how Rockstar presents the project, but does not provide full technical documentation of its engine or production tools. That boundary matters to a reliable development history: shown content can be described, while internal processes require separate evidence. The date remains an announced release. The 2023 plan for 2025 and the currently listed 2026 date belong to different information snapshots; the platform statements checked here do not confirm a PC release.
Recommendations and interpretation are editorial. Information may change after the date shown above.
