How GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was developed
Separate the originals from Grove Street’s remaster, and place later lighting updates and Video Games Deluxe’s role in context.

Original games and remasters have different roles
The collection was released on November 11, 2021. Rockstar’s store identifies the games as Rockstar developments adapted by Grove Street Games. Grove Street’s work therefore concerns the reissue of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. The original appearances of those games and the release of this collection are different milestones: 2021 identifies the new package, rather than the invention of its stories and worlds. The adaptation credit describes a particular production responsibility.

GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas originally launched on PlayStation 2. The collection revisits these three games.

The publicly stated objective
Rockstar’s announcement combines modernised controls and presentation with an intention to preserve the original aesthetic identities. The remaster would make those familiar worlds accessible on a new generation of devices. Technical updating and the recognisable character of the older games therefore formed simultaneous parts of the publicly stated development objective.
Unreal Engine and a different interface
Grove Street Games used Unreal Engine for the adaptation. Announced changes covered lighting, textures, models, shadows, weather and reflections. Interface work included aiming improvements, weapon and radio wheels, and modernised maps with waypoints. This list addresses both the visible world and the tools players use to control and navigate it.
The launch build is not every subsequent build
Rockstar’s November 2024 update notes document Classic Lighting: an option intended to recover the appearance of the original skies. They also list fixes and improvements, with separate dated entries for platform groups. This later state belongs to the production history as well. A lighting comparison therefore needs to establish whether the option was available and actually enabled. The update records a concrete change, rather than an assumption that all releases permanently retained their launch presentation.
Interpretation: subsequent work by Video Games Deluxe
In 2025, Take-Two confirmed Video Games Deluxe’s work on upgrades for iOS, Android, Netflix and modern consoles, announcing its acquisition as Rockstar Australia. Our editorial interpretation distinguishes three layers: the original games, Grove Street’s 2021 adaptation, and subsequent improvements involving another studio. This keeps the different contributions visible. A new lighting option does not explain the whole remaster, just as its launch state does not describe every later update. These stages belong together without becoming one unchanged production team.
