Leeds leads the handheld development
Rockstar’s March 2009 release announcement identifies Rockstar Leeds as developer in conjunction with Rockstar North. Chinatown Wars initially launched for Nintendo DS, telling its own story about Huang Lee in Liberty City. Sharing that city does not make it a direct conversion of GTA IV’s campaign. The official introduction presents it as an original entry in the series. This handheld game would carry its combination of crime narrative, driving and player-created urban disorder while giving its own protagonist and assignments a central role.
A three-dimensional city and a high camera
In his contemporary IGN interview, Gordon Hall explains that a high camera concentrated geometry on the visible playing area. Vehicle behaviour and camera logic were reworked accordingly. An early target of 30 frames per second required intensive optimisation. The familiar viewpoint was a deliberate technical and creative choice.
The touchscreen as a tool
Hall describes the PDA, messages and navigation alongside contextual touch interactions. Ordinary driving specifically did not need a virtual steering wheel. Dialogue used a graphic-novel presentation rather than fully voiced cinematic sequences. The DS consequently became more than a smaller screen for an already existing console campaign.

The PSP version followed the DS release in 2009. A PSP-1000 is shown as an example of the platform.

PSP and iPhone are further adaptations
The official October 2009 PSP launch announcement lists additional missions, music, graphical improvements and revised controls. The game was distributed both on UMD and digitally. The iPhone and iPod touch edition released in January 2010 introduced Multi-Touch interaction, adjusted difficulty and Independence Radio for personal playlists. The same narrative consequently acquired different technical presentations and input models. Comparing its development makes it possible to follow one underlying idea from two DS displays to a single PSP screen and then a touch device. These are details of the historical releases, rather than promises of compatibility with current hardware.
