GTA IV: Surviving Liberty City
Braking, cover, wanted levels and preparation for Niko’s story.
Drive with the car’s weight
Liberty City rewards anticipation. A heavy sedan carries more momentum into a junction than a small sports car, so finish most braking before turning and feed the throttle back in gradually. The handbrake can help with a tight turn but can also start an uncontrolled slide. Practise a short route outside a mission before a chase makes the lesson expensive. Read the radar early: one clean turn into a side street often achieves more than uninterrupted full throttle.
Prepare before the shooting starts
Bring health, body armour and ammunition to a lengthy assignment. Armour gives you room for mistakes; it does not make standing in an open road a sound tactic. Use walls and substantial pillars, reload behind protection and move when nearby opponents stop firing. Cars are temporary cover and can catch fire. If the bonnet starts smoking, find something solid. Check upper floors and rooftops as well as enemies directly in front of Niko.
Follow the actual objective
Contacts use phone calls and messages to introduce work. Check your messages and the map’s letter markers rather than repeatedly visiting an inactive location. Escort jobs also depend on your companions: let everyone enter a suitable vehicle and advance with the group during fights. The current instruction and destination matter more than eliminating every distant red dot. Extra ammunition collected from a body is a poor trade for losing a required partner.
Manage pursuit and progress
Leave the wanted search area and avoid fresh police sightings until the stars disappear. Driving to your contact while officers still see you does not resolve a pursuit. Save regularly outside missions and keep a separate slot before a long assignment. This guide covers Niko’s single-player story on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The Episodes have their own protagonists and progress. Input mappings and aiming options vary, so the advice describes actions rather than assuming one controller layout.
