Liberty City Stories: a reliable start for Toni
Learn Portland, save safely and manage the handheld-style combat.
A familiar city with different connections
Do not rely entirely on your GTA III knowledge. Liberty City Stories takes place earlier, with bridges, construction sites and connections in a different state. Story progression opens further areas gradually. First learn Portland’s main roads, your hideout and reliable approaches to contact markers. A nearby radar target may sit behind a wall or on another level.
Prepare in five steps
A calm rhythm is particularly useful on PSP. Small camera adjustments and sound positioning are more dependable than frantic aiming in the middle of several opponents.
- Save in separate slots before new mission chains. Check health, armour and ammunition for the weapons you actually intend to use.
- Choose a sturdy car for ordinary travel. Motorcycles are quick and agile, but a collision can easily throw Toni off.
- Practise target lock, target switching and free aim on your platform. A PS2 button description does not transfer directly to PSP or touch controls.
- Approach gunfights from their edges. Building corners break enemy sightlines; do not expect the automatic cover system found in later GTA games.
- Stay clear of water. Toni cannot swim, so a hurried escape beside the shoreline can abruptly end a mission.
Between assignments
Do not take a heavily damaged vehicle straight into the next dangerous journey. Use available repair and spray facilities and clear unnecessary police attention. Vehicle jobs are separate activities; every visible challenge is not an immediate requirement for story progression. PSP and PS2 versions share the core mission objectives described here, but their inputs and camera feel differ. For later arena fights, full health and an appropriate weapon are worth more than reaching the starting marker quickly. This selection accompanies individual assignments rather than replacing a complete 100% checklist. Read special objectives carefully before leaving a mission area: collecting an item or delivering a vehicle can matter as much as defeating enemies.
